WAAC NSEP clients are able to access clean injecting equipment free, on exchange of dirty equipment. NSEP staff and volunteers provide education both verbally and printed materials, to clients on how to inject safely and reduce the transmission of BBV.
TO REDUCE THE TRANSMISSION OF BBV / HIV / HEP C:
ALWAYS:
- Use clean equipment: needles, syringes, barrels, filters, swabs
- Dispose of used injecting equiptment in a safe and responsible manner
NEVER SHARE:
- Needles, syringes, barrels, filters, swabs, tourniquets, hiradoid cream, spoons, water
- If someone else is injecting for you; make sure their hands have been swabbed and have no open sores or cuts on them
ALWAYS CARRY AND USE CONDOMS: Drug use can often lead to increased high risk sexual behaviour
ALWAYS REMEMBER: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF INFECTIONS:
- Swab injecting site, moving in one direction only
- Clean surface area, spoons etc; used for preparing mix
- Crush and filter your mix thoroughly
- Do not have your tourniquet too tight; it should be firm yet comfortable
- Do not lick injecting site or end of needle
