It's A Wrap: Perth International Queer Film Festival 2016

The WA AIDS Council in collaboration with The Backlot Perth hosted the inaugural Perth International Queer Film Festival from September 9-15, 2016. Seven films showcasing the very best of International Queer Cinema premiered in Western Australia across seven nights at the boutique venue as part of a fundraising initiative for the organisation.

Each night provided an opportunity to raise awareness of the work of the organisation and its services to an audience mixed with those who had heard about the organisation before and those who hadn’t. Each night a WA AIDS Council representative thanked those attending for supporting work in raising awareness of HIV and those living with HIV in Western Australia through purchasing their ticket and supporting the fundraiser.

Support from the community was fantastic with six of the seven films selling out indicating a desire for a festival of this kind. Over 300 people attended the festival across the week with feedback expressing support for a 2017 festival. The Backlot lounge provided a great setting for people to mingle which was indicated by many as a great feature of the festival; offering a space for community to get together.

The festival program included films from across the globe including the USA, South Africa, The Netherlands and Germany with several premiering in Australia for the first time. We were also thrilled to offer ticketholders a fantastic short film prior to the main event called ‘Setting Them Straight’, a Perth made short film by Kaleb McKenna and Brett Dowson which see a young man finally set his nurturing parents straight about his sexuality. Each night, the roar of laughter from the crowd could be heard outside.

On opening night, FLUID a short film produced by young local filmmaker Jordan Calvert explored gender roles within society.

Overall the feedback has been positive. Suggestions provided in a post event survey and through discussions will be taken on board moving forward.

We sincerely thank everyone who supported the festival – ticketholders, sponsors, The Backlot, M-Appeal, The Film Collaborative, FTI and Revelations Film Festival.

Thank you to event sponsors The Backlot Perth, Curtin University, Kavanagh Lawyers, Hepatitis WA, PFlag, Richard Matias Photography, First Class Capital and Symons Legal.
