STYLEAID: Where it all began...

STYLEAID began its life with the WA AIDS Council 19 years ago. Since then, the event has developed its reputation as the number one fashion fundraising event in Perth.

In 1998, Tami McMahon (then the Councils Fundraising coordinator) explored events around the world which aimed to raise funds and awareness around HIV. One particular event STYLEAID History Click throughheld in both New York and San Francisco incorporated fashion, hair, makeup, fine dining and an auction. This idea had been implemented a year before in Melbourne and was named STYLEAID. Resonating locally, the moniker STYLEAID was employed in Perth.

The first event was held in the ballroom at the Hyatt Perth. 400 guests indulged in a specially designed menu and fashion from a range of local designers, retailers and well known Australian designers.

Designer list

The designers for the inaugural event were Avatar, Saba, Morrissey, Akira Isogawa, Ruth Tarvydas, Third Millennium, C Design, Ray Costarella, spppsssp, Fiona Andrews, Lisa Ho, Esprit, Marcs, Trent Nathan, Alex Perry, Jane Lamerton, Perri Cutten, Simona, Harry Who, Cartier, George Gross and Myer Imports.

Sponsor list

The event was hosted by former Miss Universe Kerry Anne Wells and the major sponsors were the Hyatt Regency Perth, United Distillers, Matilda Bay Brewing Co, San Pellegrino, Street Design, Touchstone Colour and Picton Press.

Supporting sponsors included: Cartier, Carberry’s Model Agency, Jemma International, Spiers Models, Ashton Admor, EMI, Columbia Tristar, Clues, Villa Bianchi, Paul McClurg for Hair.

Committee of 1998

The very first STYLEAID committee was made up of: Aaron Davey, Anthony Harden, Emma Phillips, Paul McClurg, Aly May, Paul Oswald, Lyn Marie Hegarty, Joanna Calder, Judy Carr, Mark Reid, Chelsea Bosenberg, Terry Larder, Melissa Preston, Annette Hasluck, Diane Redmond, Nana Neil Van Zee and Nina Tulic. The very first committee was chaired by Trish Langdon then Chair of the WA AIDS Council. The WA AIDS Council STYLEAID Event Manager was Tami McMahon.

The very first STYLEAID Program

Just 24 pages in length, the program featured sponsor ads, information about the designers involved, personal stories from three people living with HIV and a thank you page.

The very first welcome

As Trish said in here welcoming page of the magazine: “This inaugural event combines fashion and fun whilst raising much needed funds to deliver services to people living with HIV/AIDS in Western Australia. The fashion industry has, and continues to be, strong supporters in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Tonight we see their support, and that of all the sponsors and volunteers that have made this event possible.

The very human impact of HIV/AIDS has powerfully shaped many lives and the attitude of the community. Who can forget the images and the stories of people living with HIV/AIDS - the flickering light illuminating the faces of families and friends at Candlelight Vigils, the powerful and colourful display of remembrance quilts, and the image of a Princess hugging a person living with HIV/AIDS. It is with this remembrance, and our history, that we continue the vital work of the Western Australian AIDS Council.”

The 19th STYLEAID takes place on Friday August 5th at the newly renovated Crown Perth Grand Ballroom. For more information click here.

Living Well with HIV program: A review

By Lisa Tomney, Clinical Services Manager

Reflecting on the latter half of last year, I can say it was a very busy period for Clinical Services. Not only was support and advocacy provided on a one-on-one basis for people living with HIV (PLHIV), but a diverse range of workshops and networking events were carried out during this time.

Across ten events and activities held, attendance reached over 220. The annual Christmas community BBQ at Loton Park Tennis Club proved to be the most popular event on the calendar followed by the number of bookings for our Living Well Complementary Therapies Program which offers clients massage, Acupuncture, Reiki and Reflexology. Find out more about this Program here.

The annual Treatments Forum gathered a strong crowd focussing on Treatment as Prevention (TasP) and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), as did the August Mini Series. Held over four weeks, this series covers a range of topics for PLHIV to discuss, debate and share information.

From workshops and events held within the WA AIDS Councils walls, we headed to the natural surroundings of Perth Zoo for a family day outing. Quality time was spent with family members, and of course with creatures’ great and small including a lunch in the beautiful outdoors. An exclusive Make Up and pamper session for PLHIV titled ‘Good Spirits Day’, held by MAC Cosmetics annually on World AIDS Day experienced the highest attendance on record.

Other events held included the ‘Str8 Up’ dinner, a networking event for heterosexual PLHIV; ‘Planet Positive’ a social networking space for sharing experiences and mutual support for Gay men and Men who have Sex with Men (MSM); a ‘Dating & Disclosure’ workshop explored disclosing HIV status to family, friends and sexual partners; and ‘Beyond Positive’ explore a range of topics for HIV positive Gay and MSM.

During this period, over 230 face-to-face appointments regarding advocacy and support were provided by our team of seven. Appointments varied with support for people who had been newly diagnosed with HIV; housing; hospital and clinical appointments; mental health; and drug and alcohol dependency. There were 46 occasions of access to financial support via the ‘HIV Assistance Fund’, and distribution of 70 food hampers.

We have hit the ground running this year, with the completion of the March Mini Series, ongoing booking requests for the Living Well Complementary Therapies Program and the recent commencement of the Beyond Positive workshop series with more participants involved than the previous. So far, so good!

Pride Parade 2015

On Saturday the 21st November, the WA AIDS Council participated in it's 25th consecutive Pride WA Parade, through the streets of Northbridge.

The theme for this year's event was Silver City, and the Council's float entry was prepared accordingly. Lot's of white, silver and shiny mirrorballs, lit up with black lights, created an unforgettable kaleidoscope of light, colour and movement.

Here is some of the action from a terrific night. Head over to our Facebook page to see even more.

The WA AIDS Council would like to thank and congratulate Pride WA on 25 years of supporting the community
